Prey
Prey Project introduction from Carlos Yaconi on Vimeo.
And maybe I'm missing something, but it doesn't seem like ultimately either one of these applications is going to be very effective at actually getting your gear back unless you install some stealth keystroke logging software (2), enabling you collect data about what their typing, such as identity revealing usernames, emails, etc.
This also raises the question of how exactly you can protect yourself from this software you just consensually installed just farming data off of your computer while your using it. However, Prey is open source so theoretically you can inspect the code for yourself to see if you approve; and of course this very fact means that in all probability it's legitimately secure.
Happy cyberpunking
