List of Monsanto Seed Companies + Natural/Heirloom Alternatives
Stolen from Garden of Eatin
I am completely against GMO and the mission of this page is to urge my readers to use seed that has not been genetically modified¹.
What is GMO, and who is Monsanto?
A genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. These techniques, generally known as recombinant DNA technology, use DNA molecules from different sources, which are combined into one molecule to create a new set of genes. This DNA is then transferred into an organism, giving it modified or novel genes. (wiki)
The Monsanto Company is a U.S.-based multinational agricultural biotechnology corporation. It is the world’s leading producer of the herbicide glyphosate, marketed as “Roundup”. Monsanto is also the leading producer of genetically engineered (GE) seed; it sells 90% of the US’s GE seeds. (wiki) Seminis is also listed on this page often, they were bought out by Monsanto and cannot be considered a safe, no-GMO, company.
Why does it matter if seed has been genetically modified?
>> The Council for Responsible Genetics has an excellent FAQ page that will answer this pressing question. I invite you to visit this page on the CRG site and learn more.

For more information, just Google Monsanto. Even search their own website – their own pledges about creating a healthy sustainable planet go against everything they manufacture and do. You can’t make Round Up then turn around and say you’re trying to save the enviroment.
Who sells “safe seed” (not genetically modified)
Use this information as a starting point for your research. Call the companies you are interested in purchasing from and learn about their seed buying practices.
>> Visit this page, from the Council for Responsible Genetics. These companies have signed their safe seed pledge.

Two Blogs
The sense of the end of an epoch hangs strongly over our times, whether in the hegemonic notion of the end of a Hegelian world history, the culminant rational godhood of the Enlightenment or the exploding apocalyptic millenarianism claiming sectarian fulfillments from every direction of the earth. The age of science and technology uniformalizes the world today under thehttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif sign of neo-liberal globalization. Multinational capitalism streams through nation-states constructing its control apparatus, a omniscient panopticon, poised to fulfill the prophecy of the modern knowledge academy – the human sciences dictating a universal anthropology and psychology based on behaviorism and the market, configuring world populations as standing reserve and increasingly as appendages of fantastically efficient machineries, meshed together in finer and more invisible systems aspiring to the condition of integrality.
Next Nature
Despite the global awareness of our fragile relationship with nature and the countless projects initiated to restore the balance, almost no one has asked the question: What is our concept of nature? And how is our relationship with nature changing?

Three "Open-Sourcey" Websites/Institutions

OpenGovernment is a free and open-source public resource website for government transparency and civic engagement at the state and local levels...
The ultimate mission of OpenGovernment is to ensure that all three branches (executive, legislative, and judicial) at every level of government (federal, state, city, local, and more) comply with the Principles of Open Government Data. Public data can and should be public, immediately and in full, and it can and should be made accessible to everyone online, so as to increase trust in the political process. From this foundation of open government data, an entire ecosystem of public-interest tools can grow and evolve. Transparency, in turn, can create new opportunities for meaningful civic engagement in our representative democracy. Greater day-to-day civic engagement and citizen watchdogging, we believe, will result in reduced corruption in government, better public policy outcomes, and stronger democratic institutions.

The MetaCurrency Project
...There is the possibility of new technologies, that, like writing and the printing press before them, form the platform from which it is possible to build new kinds of social structures that design away the problem of the previous era, and similarly become a platform for new emergence. The MetaCurrency Platform is an ambitious suite of technology components that we believe could constitute this era's pivotal platform technology...
- Social groups are like living organism in that their health is the result of highly coordinated flows.
- Coordination of flows is inherently an embodied informational process.
- In modern societies, money is the fundamental informational tool used to coordinate flows of goods and services, in a process most often called "the economy."
- Money is not the only informational tool used to coordinate flows, in fact, it is one of a whole host of such information systems that make visible and allow the coordination of flows. It is not widely understood that money is an instance of a broader category.
- The broader category of such information systems (what we call currencies) are those formal information systems that mark flows, which makes them visible and allow us to interact with and shape them. Not only material flows, but flows of all types, like flows of social participation and attention.
- To make this broader category accessible and visible we need a meta-informational capacity, a kind of grammar and syntax, that makes construction of all sorts of currencies possible.
- having a way of identifying the agents that comprise the social organism that will transact
- having a common grammar and syntax in which to express the statements that constitute valid transactions in the various currencies
- having a medium of transmission for the transactions
- having a reliable record of the transactions

Two and a Half Options for Protecting Your Portal to the Metaverse From Being (Successfully) Stolen
LogMeIn Free gives you remote control of your PC or Mac from any other computer with an Internet connection.
Simply install LogMeIn on the computer you want to access (it takes about 2 minutes), log into your account from another computer and click the computer you want to control. You'll see its desktop and be able to use all the applications on your remote computer as if you were sitting in front of it - even if you're across town, across the country, or across the world.
Prey
Prey Project introduction from Carlos Yaconi on Vimeo.
And maybe I'm missing something, but it doesn't seem like ultimately either one of these applications is going to be very effective at actually getting your gear back unless you install some stealth keystroke logging software (2), enabling you collect data about what their typing, such as identity revealing usernames, emails, etc.
This also raises the question of how exactly you can protect yourself from this software you just consensually installed just farming data off of your computer while your using it. However, Prey is open source so theoretically you can inspect the code for yourself to see if you approve; and of course this very fact means that in all probability it's legitimately secure.

Two Non-Crowd-Based Investment Firms Geared Towards Start-Ups
Third Rail Ventures is a new startup to build the capacity of triple bottom line entrepreneurs and to support enterprise as a vehicle for social change worldwide. With a lifetime of experience starting up all sorts of good green things, we believe that the greatest resource entrepreneurs need right now is eachother. We are bootstrapping this concept into a reality and hosting a new networking event series, Green Breakfast Club. As we grow, so will our platform to foster a solidarity economy that brings ideas into fruition through partnerships and alliances at the convergence of enterprise, international development and technology.
We are at seed stage. It’s time to get this startup, and yours, off the ground. Let’s do this. Together.
Founder Collective
As venture capital funds get increasingly large, we have created a small fund (~$40M) that is dedicated to investing in seed stage deals.
Unlike big venture capital firms, we expect to generate returns almost exclusively from seed stage investments. Hence, we have the same incentives as founders to increase the value of the company in future financings. We are also comfortable with smaller exits if that's what the founders want.
A significant portion of our fund comes from active entrepreneurs, many of whom have made Founder Collective their sole entity for private company investing. When we invest in your company, you get access to and help from these entrepreneurs.
We think there is a particular need for this on the East Coast of the US, where we are based. We think the East Coast is poised for a technology revival and we hope to be part of it.
None of us have ever been bankers. We like products and building stuff. We show up on time and don't email during meetings.
Think of it as peer-to-peer investing.

Greenhorns: Docummentary About U.S.'s Growing Return-To-The-Land Movement
The Greenhorns documentary film, now in post-production, explores the lives of America's young farming community - its spirit, practices, and needs. It is the filmmaker's hope that by broadcasting the stories and voices of these young farmers, we can build the case for those considering a career in agriculture - to embolden them, to entice them, and to recruit them into farming.
The production of The Greenhorns is part of our grassroots nonprofit's larger campaign for agricultural reform. We are an activist organization that does much else besides. Please take a look around our website, watch the trailer, visit our blog, tune in to our radio show, come to an event, and get in touch.
Intervention In Libya: Humanitarian Aid or Imperalism?
Libya’s Slippery Slope
Barely 24 hours after the first Allied air strikes, President Obama’s high-flying Libyan adventure is losing altitude. The smoke hadn’t cleared from the first air strikes when the head of the Arab League complained that “what happened differs from the no-fly zone objectives. What we want is civilians’ protection, not shelling more civilians.” Russia and China, who abstained at the Security Council, are already getting restless.
Nothing humanitarian about U.S. intervention
The claims of Western governments that their war on Libya is "protecting civilians" is a cover for pursuing imperial interests

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is an ever-growing, worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of awesomeness in the universe.
Created in the long hot summer days of 2009 in Boston, the Foundation distributes a series of monthly $1,000 grants to projects and their creators. The money is given upfront in cash, check, or gold doubloons by groups of ten or so self-organizing “micro-trustees,” who form autonomous chapters around geographic areas or topics of interest.
The Foundation provides these grants with no strings attached and claims no ownership over the projects it supports. It is, in the words of one of our trustees, a micro-genius grant for flashes of micro-brilliance.
Since its humble beginnings, many Awesome Foundation chapters have sprung up globally to conserve, sustain, and support the worldwide ecosystem of awesomeness. Projects have included efforts in a wide range of areas including technology, arts, social good, and beyond.
